Sound Technology Japan, Inc.: Corporate History
Talking about Sound Technology Japan, Inc. (Suntec), a karaoke-data company that published two PlayStation games.
Suntec was a Japanese company that developed karaoke content and later dipped its toes into making video games. The name of this company is already confusing enough. The official English version is Sound Technology Japan, Inc., however, that's not exactly the same as the Japanese one. The Japanese name is 株式会社サンテックジャパン. 株式会社 would translate to something like "Co., Ltd." while サンテックジャパン is a clipped contraction of サウンド・テクノロジー (saundo tekunoroji), so サンテック is サン = san (sound) + テック = tekku (tech), consequently, "Suntech," or at least that's what I thought, but I was wrong, because it's spelled pretty much everywhere as Suntec. This is a fairly common company name, though, even Japanese Wikipedia (n.d.-a) warns about an unrelated solar system installation company located in Niigata that's also named サンテックジャパン (Suntec Japan; ENF Solar, n.d.), and we'll list a few more homonyms later.
Regardless, sources more authoritative than Wikipedia help us clarify the actual name:
- 10101 "WILL" The Starship (serial SLPS-01054, released 1997-11-06, 6,090 yen tax-in), published by (株)サンテックジャパン, prints the copyright line "(C)1997 Sound Techuology Japan.Inc." The typo "Techuology" is Sony's, on the official page (Wayback capture, 2008-12-13; PlayStation.com Japan, 2008) (maybe they were just as confused as me at this point).
- The Ritsumeikan Center for Game Studies (n.d.) cataloged a physical copy of the company's 1996 game release 里見の謎 (SLPS-00613). From the object itself it recorded 出版者名表示 サンテックジャパン, 出版地 東京都杉並区, 商品識別コード 4518885010015 (Publisher: Suntec Japan; Place of Publication: Suginami Ward, Tokyo; Product Identification Code: 4518885010015), and 著作権表示 (Copyright Notice) ©1996 SOUND TECHNOLOGY JAPAN, Inc. The Japanese publisher line and the English copyright name can be found on the same packaged product.
- The Internet Archive scan of the 10101 booklet reads "©1997 Sound Technology Japan, Inc." on the cover (Internet Archive, n.d.-a).
- The company's own website, captured by the Wayback Machine on 1999-04-28, opens with the name "Sound Technology Japan, Inc." and a 1998 copyright.
That's enough evidence to settle the name issue, I suppose. Not everything is established, however; the founding narrative has some holes. Japanese Wikipedia (n.d.-a) states the company was founded around 1990 as 株式会社サウンド・テクノロジー・ジャパン and later renamed, but no registry instrument I could find supports the sequential name change. The Media Arts Database record C46411 repeats the 1990 founding and the 2004-06-29 end date, but its stated sources are the Wikipedia articles plus the RCGS package already cited, so it adds no independent weight (Media Arts Database, n.d.).
What's verified is only that director and musician Mitsui Kazumasa (三井一正) already used both name forms together on his personal site listing a 1993–97 director contract with (株)サンテックジャパン (Mitsui, n.d.-b). A bit of digging made the original assertion even less supported, because it was introduced into Wikipedia by an anonymous editor in 2010, replacing a vaguer pre-existing claim, and has never carried a citation in sixteen years.
The sentence in question (current article text): "1990年頃、株式会社サウンド・テクノロジー・ジャパンとして設立される。その後サンテックジャパンに改称された。" ("The company was established around 1990 as Sound Technology Japan Co., Ltd. It was later renamed Suntec Japan.")
Revision history (MediaWiki API, verified):
| Revision | Timestamp (UTC) | Editor | Edit summary | Contains claim? |
|---|---|---|---|---|

Diff of rev 32686669 → 32703235:
- ⚫ 1990年頃設立。
+ 1990年頃、株式会社サウンド・テクノロジー・ジャパンとして設立される。
+ その後サンテックジャパンに改称された。
So, in English:
- ⚫ Established around 1990.
+ Established around 1990 as Sound Technology Japan Co., Ltd.
+ The company was later renamed Suntec Japan.
The pre-existing text was a vague, unsourced bullet reading only "founded around 1990," which the editor replaced with a specific, checkable-looking corporate name and added a sequential rename with no source and no reference.
Some corroborating facts:
- The article was created 2010-01-24 by a different anonymous IP (122.30.178.186) and built over ~6 months almost entirely by anonymous IPs.
- The founding sentence has never carried a citation in any revision from 2010 to present.
- The 1990 founding date itself is also unsourced, no registry instrument supports it.
Now, let's take a closer look at Mitsui's site. Two separate pages mention サンテック:
Pages/plofile.html (三井一正プロフィ歴; Mitsui, n.d.-c) - his CV, containing: "1993~97 (株)サンテックジャパンとディレクター契約" (1993–97: Director contract with Suntec Japan, Inc.) - hyperlinked to stj.html.
Pages/stj.html (Mitsui, n.d.-a) - a one-paragraph description, no image, no date, no per-page author attribution:
(株)サンテックジャパン / SOUND TECHNOLOGY JAPAN,INC. は主に通信カラオケのデータ制作会社で、約10,000曲の制作実績がある。現在は音楽制作よりゲームソフトをメインに制作をしている。ゲームは監督と脚本を担当。
Gloss: Suntec Japan / Sound Technology Japan, Inc. is mainly a communications-karaoke data production company, with about 10,000 songs produced. It now makes game software more than music. For games, the company handles direction and screenwriting.
Under this reading my interpretation is that 株式会社サウンド・テクノロジー・ジャパン is a back-formation: someone (possibly the 2010 anonymous editor) reasoned "the English name is Sound Technology Japan, therefore the original Japanese name must have been サウンド・テクノロジー・ジャパン, and it was later shortened." I also like making up stuff, so in my head, this version is now canon, though obviously unverified. Technically, I should be able to settle the issue by giving a call to whichever Branch Office handles 成東町小松 (last known address) asking whether the register for 株式会社サンテックジャパン still exists, and request 登記事項証明書(履歴事項全部) (Certificate of Registered Matters (Complete History)) if it is within retention for ~¥490–600 to see whether 商号変更 (Change of Business Name) ever occurred, but unfortunately I'm scared of talking to people.
Now, this is indeed an insider primary evidence, but we still need to add a few qualifications. The page is GoLive CyberStudio 3 markup; it is not a 1990s Wayback capture, so the words are genuine but the upload date is not proven to be 1997.
The company's own archived site tells the same story commercially. The 2000-12-10 会社案内 (company guide; Sound Technology Japan, 2000) names 株式会社サンテックジャパン at 〒296-0001 千葉県鴨川市横渚907, telephone 0470-93-6681, email stj@stjp.com, under the brand k'Night!. The 1999-11-15 rate card lists digital recording tracks, PlayStation sound production, MIDI data production, musician placement, mastering, and CD production, each from 5万 yen. By the 2001-12-20 revision the card had expanded to packaged menus: a PC game title (MIDI, studio-recorded WAV, sound effects, 10 or more background tracks) from 20万 yen, consumer-console work from 50万 yen, and CD package runs.
Okay, but why am I looking into this company in the first place? Because they made some interesting stuff. Two games in particular, at least one of which is a cult classic of sort today, though not because it's so good. Quite the opposite, actually. The games in question are these:
| 里見の謎 (Satomi no Nazo) | 10101 "WILL" The Starship | |
|---|---|---|
| Serial | SLPS-00613 | SLPS-01054 |
| Released | 1996-12-06 | 1997-11-06 |
| JAN | 4518885010015 | 4518885010022 |
| Price | 5,800 yen | 6,090 yen tax-in |
| Genre as catalogued | RPG | アドベンチャー |
| Disc layout | 2 tracks (1 data + 1 audio) | 15 tracks (1 data + 14 audio) |
| Director | Kazumasa Mitsui | Kazumasa Mitsui |
| Producer | Yumeo Ozawa | Yumeo Ozawa |
Both discs are verified by Redump (n.d.-a, n.d.-b). The audio-track count grew from one to fourteen between the two releases. Sony's catalogue for 10101 states that a full-voice system (フルボイスシステム) speaks every line (PlayStation.com Japan, 2008). It also names the voice cast, emphasizing the presence of Ai Iijima (飯島愛), a famous adult video actress (AV女優). (Yes, I watched some.) Slight digression, but she's an interesting character I may (or may not) look further into later. According to her autobiography, プラトニック・セックス (Platonic Sex), while still in junior high, she began spending every night out at discos with a group of delinquents, and led a life of repeated shoplifting and extortion to fund her nightlife, only to later end up being scouted into AV while working as a hostess in Roppongi. But let's circle back to Suntec for now.
After the two console titles, the company retreated from the consumer market and operated adult-game brands k'Night! (read ナイト, not ナイツ, the company's own guide gives the kana) and Studio TAKO. k'Night!'s content catalogue by 2002 listed さよならの微笑み, さよならの微笑み2, みんと, and 麻雀オールk'Night!シスターズ.
Let's dig into where the company was actually located. The verified address series runs as follows:
| Date | Address | Instrument |
|---|---|---|
| 1996-12 | 出版地 東京都杉並区 on the 里見の謎 package (Place of Publication: Suginami Ward, Tokyo) | RCGS physical package record |
| 1997-11 | 東京都杉並区梅里1-8-7 木村ビル2F on the 10101 user-registration card (mail-to block) (2F, Kimura Building, 1-8-7 Umezato, Suginami-ku, Tokyo 166-0011, Japan) - 梅里 = Umezato (うめざと), Postcode 166-0011. | Internet Archive card scans |
| 2000-04-16 → 2001-04 | 〒296-0001 千葉県鴨川市横渚907, tel 0470-93-6681 (907 Yokosuka, Kamogawa City, Chiba 296-0001, Japan) - 横渚 = Yokosuka (よこすか), and this reading literally made me mad. Identical romanization to 横須賀 (the navy city). The kanji differ (渚 "shore" vs 須賀), the etymology too, since すか is an old word for sandbar, "the beach stretching sideways" (リビング千葉Web編集部, n.d.). | Company's own 会社案内, Wayback captures |
| 2001-12-20 → 2004-08 | 〒289-1302 千葉県山武郡成東町小松3758-1, tel 0475-84-1991 (Historical (as printed): 3758-1 Komatsu, Narutō-machi, Sanbu District, Chiba 289-1302, Japan / Current equivalent: 3758-1 Komatsu, Sanmu City, Chiba 289-1302, Japan) | Company's own 会社案内, Wayback captures |
The move to Kamogawa predates the earliest archived address block (2000-04-16); the 成東町 move came between the 2001-04 and 2001-12-20 captures. The 成東町 move is absent from the Wikipedia narrative.
Wikipedia's claimed 1996 move to Funakata, Tateyama City (館山市船形), Chiba (Japanese Wikipedia, n.d.-a) is not supported anywhere throughout the official site's existence. The timing sits against two print instruments eleven months apart, both reading Suginami Ward, Tokyo (東京都杉並区): the December-1996 package and the November-1997 registration card. Six years of the company's own archived address series (2000–2004) show Kamogawa (鴨川) then Narutō-machi (成東町) and never a Tateyama (館山) address. (No, 成東町 is not named after Naruto Uzumaki. It's a former town in Sanbu District, Chiba, abolished 2006-03-27 (merged with Sanmu-machi, Matsuo-machi, Hasunuma → Sanmu City; Japanese Wikipedia, n.d.-b).) A brief 1996–97 Tateyama episode followed by a move to Kamogawa is not strictly excluded, because no capture predates 2000-04, but nothing supports it. Bonus trivia since I spent hours on this: East Japan Railway's (JR東日本) Nakofunakata Station (那古船形駅) (at 館山市船形227) is a merged station name, they bolted Nako (那古) onto Funakata (船形) in 1918 precisely because bare "Funakata" was confusable with Funagata Station (舟形駅) in Yamagata (山形) (Japanese Wikipedia, n.d.-c).
A Tokyo liaison address also exists outside the claimed chain: adult-brand print ads in the May 2001 issue of BugBug credit (株)サンテックジャパン at 東京都練馬区上石神井3-34-21-302, compatible with a Kamogawa headquarters plus a Tokyo office (Internet Archive, n.d.-b).
No corporate registry instrument was found for the company: no 国税庁 法人番号 row, no gBizINFO profile, no 登記事項証明書 or 官報 bankruptcy notice could be acquired, no Teikoku/TSR credit-bureau write-up either. Lack of a corporate number (法人番号) is expected if the firm was struck off before the 2015 numbering system, so that's not quite a disproof.
The company's end date cannot be verified (or at least I couldn't). The date 2004-06-29 (and the framing "went bankrupt and dissolved circa 2004") appears only in the Wikipedia chain and the Media Arts Database, which cites Wikipedia (Japanese Wikipedia, n.d.-a; Media Arts Database, n.d.). No 官報 破産公告, dissolution notice, or credit-bureau record was reachable: the official gazette search is a paid member service and I'm broke, the volunteer full-text mirror's search endpoint fails, and the credit-bureau search found no 倒産速報 for a Chiba karaoke/game company of this name. I feel defeated, but I did everything I could that didn't cost money. What the archived website does establish is liveness into August 2004: the root splash was archived live on 2004-08-13 (and the company guide and rate card on 2004-08-17), the original site was gone by a Network Solutions placeholder capture on 2004-09-20, and the domain was monetized by DomainHop parking by 2005-02-08. A web lapse, though, is not proof of dissolution. A company can be bankrupt with a live site, and the site can die by abandonment with no insolvency pending, I would know since I had dozens of sites and all died.
The promised notable homonym exclusions, all verified against registry instruments:
- サン・テック株式会社, 千葉県館山市船形276番地の27, 法人番号 9040001074485, representative 三澤千佳子 (National Tax Agency, n.d.): a construction/groundwork firm. Its corporate-number record was captured live on 2026-09-18; it publishes no establishment date, and its single history entry is the 2015-10-05 corporate-number designation, the nationwide launch date of the numbering system. Either way it is not the game publisher: different kana (サン・テック, not サンテックジャパン), different industry, continuous post-2004 operation. The near-identical 船形 address was a trap all along.
- Five exact-商号 shells named 株式会社サンテックジャパン appear in gBizINFO (n.d.): 東京都練馬区 (法人番号 5011601002718), 東京都大田区山王, 新潟県長岡市 (1110001024721), 兵庫県姫路市, and a closed 福岡市中央区 entity (3290001064351, closed 2016-06-01). None is in Chiba, none has karaoke or game content, and none carries a positive link to the publisher. The 練馬区 shell leans homonym at medium confidence: its registered address (東京都練馬区関町東1丁目15番14号) is a different Nerima neighborhood from the 2001 BugBug liaison address several kilometers away, but a registered office need not equal a liaison address, and no instrument settles its founding date.
- サンテックコーポレーション㈱ of Toyama (glass manufacturing, 民事再生法 filing 2004-03-19, about 6.1 billion yen in debt) was the closest false-positive for my "Suntec bankruptcy 2004" search. Excluded by prefecture, industry, and proceeding type.
- Current Japanese companies named "サンテック" in construction, optics, or solar power are entirely unrelated.
To be honest, the main reason I spent all day writing this is that Satomi no Nazo filtered me pretty hard and I got bored. A longer retrospective will follow, but for now let's just say it lives up to its reputation. Getting one-tapped back to the title screen by the tutorial grandpa made me rage quit, so I ended up watching some 周防パトラ to figure out how combat actually works while looking up the company's history. And now here we are.
Special thanks to MiMo-V2.6-Pro and Step 5 Preview for helping me untangle the mysteries of Japanese place names and anonymous Wikipedia updates respectively.
